My most recent adventures are through an indie game known as Cave Story (or Doukutsu Monogatari). The image shown is thanks to the Cave Story wiki. See, in order to get the best ending, you need to fight this guy. I’m not going to give any spoilers to the plot, but you’ll learn a little of the theme behind him.
You see, his name is Ballos. You can also tell by the picture that his eyes are different from each other. I’ve noticed that some people have mistaken the reasoning for his name. When you fight him, he will eventually look like a giant ball, hence the confusion. You need to remember, however, that this game was originally Japanese. Ballos’ name, as far as I know, does not get changed. I believe that his name was derived from the powerful Celtic entity, Balor. Balor was constantly depicted as a malignant being with one gigantic, swollen eye. Details, as to why his eye was like that vary from story to story. Eyes are a common theme when fighting Ballos in Doukutsu. (spoiler alert) In the second, and fourth stages, his eyes are his weak point. In the third stage, he is surrounded by eyes that you must destroy.(end spoiler) Ballos’ asymmetric eyes seen in the aforementioned picture only reinforce the similarities seen between the two figures.
There you have it. The final boss of Cave Story when you play it right is actually a malignant Celtic deity. If you beat him, you kill a god. There’s a self esteem boost for you.
